Obituary

William "Bill" Everett Reynolds, 87, passed away unexpectedly on July 24, 2025, while visiting family across the Midwest. Bill was born and raised in rural Illinois. After graduating from Woodstock High School, he spent four years working and attending nursing training before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served diligently as an Operating Room Technician for four years in Bethesda, Maryland. There, he met Operating Room Nurse and Officer Audrey Brennan. After Bill's separation from the Navy, he and Audrey married. While being a husband, father, and working full-time, Bill pursued his college degree. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University in 1970. In 1971, they moved with their two young daughters to Audrey's hometown in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, where he spent the rest of his life.

After serving in the Navy, Bill worked as a Comptroller for Thompson Ford and later for L.D. Amory Seafood. In retirement, after Bill and Audrey took their first cruise, he turned his passion for travel into a part-time job by becoming a cruise travel agent. He eventually went on over 30 cruises, often generously inviting and treating friends and family. His keen mind for numbers and his dedication to doing things "by the book" led to a second career as a tax preparer, which he continued until he was 86. Of all the titles Bill held, his favorite by far was "PawPaw." He deeply cherished his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Many of his grandchildren's friends and families lovingly adopted him as their PawPaw.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruby Reynolds; his first wife of 43 years, Audrey Reynolds; and his sons-in-law, Scot Lehrer and Jon Lee. He is survived by his wife of nine sweet and memorable years, Sue Reynolds; treasured daughters Cindy Earwood (Greg) and Debbie Lehrer; stepdaughters Rene Lee and Erica Wages (Brent); grandchildren Bryan (Kristen), Todd (Amanda), and Allison Earwood; Ian and Addy Lee; Clint (Sandy), Zack, and Alex (Jenn) Robertson; and Bryce Wages; nine great-grandchildren he adored; his brother Jack Myers (Karen); and many nieces, nephews, and a crowd of "extended grandkids" who loved him like their own.

In 1999, Bill discovered that true faith was about more than just religion.  He surrendered his life to Jesus and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.  In 2013, Bill was baptized and joined Liberty Baptist Church.  A few years later, Bill began to get more involved with some of the senior adult ministries at the church. At one of their events, a Halloween costume party, Bill met Sue, and God began writing their next chapter.

In 2016, the Lord blessed Bill and Sue with a second chance at love when they married. Bill quickly welcomed Sue and her family as his own. Bill and Sue's nine years together were filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable adventures. Like two giddy newlyweds, they traveled to 48 states, visited over 30 National Parks and monuments, cruised seven times, stayed at two all-inclusive resorts, and created memories that would last a lifetime. Many friends and family followed their journey as Bill shared their adventures on Facebook, while Sue, the primary driver, chauffeured them around. Often, when they were out, people would stop to tell them how cute they were together.

Bill had a gift for making the mundane feel special. He was a man of many interests: gardening, woodworking, sewing, crafting, telling jokes, cooking in bulk, making his famous fudge, traveling, snorkeling, and cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs and Washington Redskins. His annual Christmas letter was always detailed and heartfelt, filled with humor and love. He was ever present at his grandchildren's sporting and school events and was so proud of the people they have become.

Throughout his life, Bill also gave generously of his time. He served as a Mentor through the Catholic Church and later became a Liberty Builder, using his hands to help others in his church and community. In a move that surprised even his family, he joined the senior adult choir—The Heart Throbs—and performed for local nursing homes, adding "joyful noises" to the list of ways he made people smile.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at Noon on Saturday, August 9, 2025, in the Chapel of Liberty Live Church, 1021 Big Bethel Rd., Hampton, VA. In honor of PawPaw's relaxed and welcoming spirit, casual attire is encouraged. Feel free to wear a Caribbean shirt or a t-shirt that reminds you of him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Bill's urn will be placed at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
