Obituary

William Richard Gorman, 76, son of Joseph V. Gorman and Mary Jane Desmond Gorman, passed away on January 2, 2024.  Born in Lynchburg, VA, he was he youngest of 8 children.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janet McElroy Gorman, and his children, Jan Gorman Goulden (Paul), William R. Gorman II, Jennifer Martin Hirschhorn (Wes) and Melissa Martin Lee (James).  He is also survived by two sisters, Henrietta Weidman and Marguerite Miletic, and nine grandchildren whom he dearly loved.  He was preceded in death by his wife Judy Coleman Gorman and his second wife, Christine Martin Gorman, as well as his parents and five siblings.

In 1967, Bill and his wife, Judy, moved to Hampton and then Newport News.  Having attended the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School, Class of 1970, Bill worked first at the NN Shipyard and later at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  He retired as a DoD Civilian, having worked for the Navy.

Bill has been a parishioner of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church for more than 50 years and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Bill had a loving and giving heart.  He donated platelets and whole blood to the Red Cross for over 45 years.  He loved being outdoors, gardening, ice skating, scuba diving, horseback riding, boating, fishing, keeping bees, and making friends with every dog he ever met.  He shared his encyclopedic knowledge of small engines, ships, history, old movies, electricity, ham radio, grandpa jokes, and fixing things with his grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed by all, including his dog, Gabe.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Monday, January 22, 2024 in St. Michael Hall at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 144 Harpersville Rd. in Newport News.  Arrangements are by Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions in Hampton, 757-825-8070.
