Obituary

Vera Ernestine Solomon was born in Orlando, FL to parents Roger Pitts and Annis Lamar on June 9, 1928. Shortly after finishing high school, she married her sweety, James Solomon on May 5, 1947 and moved to New York for better opportunities to raise their children. To this union was born Jimmy Lee, JoAnn Jeanette and Phyllis Joy.

The Solomon family house became a regular meeting place for the family clan, neighbors and friends to gather for holiday festivities, birthday celebrations, weekend card games served up with pig's feet, chitterlings, fried fish and collards and let us not ever forget Sunday morning breakfast of her homemade waffles, bacon, sausage and orange juice!

Mom and Dad worked very hard to provide for their children and extended family. She started working part time at A & S Department Stores downtown Brooklyn and later spent the next 20 years at The New York Bell Telephone Company. She started off as an operator and was affectionately called "Ernie" from the character Ernestine in the comedy tv show "Laugh In" in the late 1960's.

Once retired Vera and James moved from Brooklyn to High Point, NC where they took full advantage of traveling to Europe and cruising to the Bahamas. They became active members of Memorial United Methodist Church where Vera served on the usher board for over 30 years along with volunteering at the local hospital twice a week, participated on a bowling league every Friday (by the way she was not happy if her score was below 190), and a member of the Silver and Gold Bridge Club where besides playing bridge, these ladies also were servants to their community. Her other interests, besides doting on her family, was playing bid whist and spades, hosting Pokeno games at the house, shopping (she always looked glamorous), crossword puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Judge Judy, and Crime Scene Investigations and having a glass of white wine or Bacardi and Coke in the evenings!

On August 3, 2022, our mother, Auntie and Nana was called home having a wonderful, blessed life at the age of 94. She blessed all who came in contact with her and will be truly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Solomon, Sr, and great-grand daughter Bianca.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, JoAnn Solomon and Phyllis Solomon-Hardy (Linda Hardy); son, Jimmy (Yvonne) Solomon; sister Cora Greene; grandchildren: Yvette (Warren) Bennett, Niama (Vincent) Roland, Jamahl 'Sekou' Solomon, Kareem (Crystal) Solomon, Veris (Lamont) Ward, Khalid Solomon, Vaughn Nelson (Britney Evans); Great-grandchildren: K.J., Jayla, Olivia, Tre, Aniyah, Kamari, Gaige, Gavin, with Kyle on the way, Bria, and Warren.
