Obituary

In her home, surrounded by her family and covered in love and prayer, Rita DelCorso Cenname, 76, peacefully passed away, on December 5, 2024. Daughter of Major General Sylvester T. DelCorso and Emma Louise DelCorso 1 Lt., RN, Rita was born in Berea, Ohio.

Following in her mother's footsteps, Rita gained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from St. John's College of Cleveland, OH, in 1970.  She began her nursing career at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Rita was a compassionate and dedicated nurse with a heart for community health and helping people. She initiated and ran the first school clinic at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and worked part time for Dr. Robert E. Feely while raising her three girls and helping start and grow the family businesses, CMI and Rule Contracting.

After raising her girls, Rita then worked for Riverside Business Health in Newport News. In that capacity she tirelessly worked directly at Christopher Newport University to help build, manage and expand CNU Health Services. She served as the primary point of contact as the BSN, RN, in delivering health services to a growing residential student population. Rita then became the Warwick High School nurse and then during the pandemic, the Covid Response Nurse for all of Newport News Public School nurses, faculty and staff.  She was best known for her caring nature and compassion for all students, faculty and staff wherever she worked and her all enveloping love of her family.

Apart from nursing, Rita loved cooking, sailing, playing tennis, playing board games, having big family dinners and even bigger family holidays, visiting with friends, enjoying a well made Manhattan and most of all, spending time with her family. Her grandchildren especially, brought her enormous joy and she was so blessed to have seen all six of them grow up, graduate from high school and head off in their various directions to begin their various careers. A fuller, more love-filled life, she couldn't have lived.

Rita was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, in Newport News. She had a faith that could move mountains and prayed ceaselessly. Her love of family came second only to her love of God.

Rita is survived by her daughters, Michelle Cenname McCullers and fiancé Brice Beddingfield of Newport News, Lori Sprott and her husband, Chris, of Hampton, Jennifer Cenname and her husband, Reynaldo Escalona, Jr. of Newport News; grandchildren, Abigayle Cenname, Sibly McCullers, USCG Petty Officer 1st Class Kyler McCullers, Cameron Sprott 1st class cadet, Anna Sprott and Emmy Cenname; one great-grandchild (via Kyler) on the way; brother, Robert Del Corso, LTC (ret.) and his wife, Teri; sister, Ann Momper and her husband, Andy, as well as many nieces and nephews, whom she adored.
