Nancy Avery Webb

Nancy Avery Webb, 90, widow of George H. Webb, Jr., also lovingly known as, Mom, Grandma, GG, “the Nance”, your sweet Mom and sweet Aunt Nancy, passed away on August 28, 2026. She was born to David and Betty Avery on November 14,1935 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts along with her three siblings David (d), Nita, and Donald and took pride in being the big sister. She attended Catholic schools and Sunday mass with her family and developed a lifelong relationship with God. At the age of 17, her father, a longshoreman, relocated the family to Hampton, Virginia for work. Mom completed her final year of high school at Hampton High School graduating with the class of 1953 as a “Crabber”. Her family moved back to Cambridge but she stayed having found love, married and had four daughters by the time she was 25 years old.

As life would have it, in her early thirties, she found herself raising her girls on her own. She went to work at Old Point National Bank, which led to a 30 year banking career, applied and received her drivers license and forged through. In 1971, she married George “Buster” Webb, together they shared 32 years of love, laughter, and countless memories.

She was a good Mom. Our house always smelled of Lemon Pledge and homemade baked cookies. She was a self taught seamstress keeping us in little Christmas and Easter dresses, summer outfits, and eventually, as we got older, prom dresses, graduation dresses, and wedding dresses. She taught us how to stretch a dollar, run a house and make a home, push through difficult times, become strong, independent women, but most importantly, to put our faith in God, remember to say our prayers, and always be thankful.

She loved music and dancing, a good movie with a bowl of buttered popcorn, a screened porch, a hardy belly laugh and a margarita. She perfected the art of southern fried chicken, could make a mean lasagna and was known for her prized Christmas ginger snaps. She was at times strong willed and stubborn, a force of nature, known to throw a bedroom slipper if the situation required.

She was devoted to family and claimed her daughters as her greatest achievement. She took great delight in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and treasured every moment with them. She remained close with her brother Donald and never missed the daily 3:30 call from her sister Nita - a tradition that meant so much to them both. She also shared a special relationship with each of her son-in-law‘s, Terry, Lester, and John (d) whom she loved and welcomed as family. In her later years, she became especially close to Terry and Lester. They took her wherever she needed to go - to the grocery store, hair appointments, doctors’ appointments, and, of course, out to lunch. She looked forward to their time together and loved them both dearly.

In 2022, Mom moved to The Hidenwood, a retirement community. Once settled, she immersed herself in all aspects of community life. She was elected Resident Ambassador of the Resident Council, a position included welcoming new residents and providing information to ease their transition into community living. She took her responsibilities seriously and always greeted them with warmth and a smile. She also participated in various activities such as, bingo, lunch and dinner outings, shopping excursions, and especially enjoyed the musical entertainment provided by the Hidenwood. Music brought her great joy, and she loved listening, singing along, and being part of the lively gatherings. She made many friends among residence and staff. We would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to Sharon and Candace third-floor nurses; Chris Cook, Senior Executive Director of The Hidenwood; and Karen from Bridge Hospice for their tender love and care. Each held a special place in her heart.

Finally, let it be known: although she lived in Virginia for more than 70 years, she always considered Massachusetts home. She was a “damn Yankee” through and through and “y’all” never once crossed her lips.

It is said no one is perfect, but she was perfect enough for us. We were lucky to have her, and will forever love and miss her.

She is survived by her daughters, Sindee Austin (Terry), Sheryl Baber (Lester), Sharon Barr and Susan Leonard; sister Nita Beals; brother Donald G Avery (Betty); grandchildren Amber Crocker, Drew Austin, Andy Austin, Jared Baber, Nykki Kellam, Traci Chewning, Denny Leonard, and Ryan Leonard; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow the Mass in the church columbarium. Reception to follow in the church hall.

The family wishes, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the charity of your choice.
