Obituary

Monica Kelly Barry, whose life was a beautiful symphony of love, compassion, and unwavering faith, passed away on September 12, 2023 at the age of 75.  Born in Providence, RI, she has been a resident of Hampton Roads since 1958.  She previously worked for the City Attorney of Newport News, and became a stay-at-home-mom in 1990 at the birth of her daughter. She directed the choir at Immaculate Conception Church and was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Newport News. She was a St. Vincent de Paul Catholic High School (subsequently Peninsula Catholic High School) graduate, class of 1965.

Monica was born on September 17, 1947 to John and Helen Kelly, and from that moment forward, their love and guidance shaped the wonderful person she became. Monica was a loving wife to her husband of 53 years, Kevin Barry, a devoted mother to daughter, Kelly B. Smith (Kevin) and elated grandmother to granddaughter, Eliana Providence Smith. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Voglewede; brothers, John A. Kelly (Patricia), Patrick Kelly, Raymond Kelly (Cheryl), Thomas Kelly (Gail) and Vincent Kelly (Cindy); and multiple nieces and nephews. Monica leaves behind a legacy of love that serves as a shining example for us all. Her devotion to her husband, daughter, granddaughter, family, and friends was a testament to the power of love to transform lives and create lasting bonds. Though she may be physically absent, her love will forever be in our hearts, a constant presence that will continue to inspire us to love deeply, cherish our families, and live life with an open heart.

Music was near and dear to Monica's heart, a melody that infused every aspect of her life. Through song, her soul found solace and joy. Her enthusiasm for music was so contagious, and she shared it generously with those around her, making the world a more harmonious place. But Monica's compassion extended beyond music; it encompassed all living creatures. Her deep affection for animals was evident in her tireless efforts to care for and protect them. She opened her heart and home to countless furry companions over the years, providing them with love, shelter, and a second chance at life. Her kindness was a testament to the boundless love she had for all beings, great and small. Faith was the cornerstone of Monica's life. Her unwavering trust in God guided her through life's challenges and triumphs. She found strength through her Catholic faith, and it was a wellspring of hope that she generously shared with those who crossed her path. Her love of God was a source of comfort and inspiration, a guiding light that brightened the path for her family and friends.
