Obituary

Louis Parks Swan, affectionately known as Lou, departed this life on the 3rd of July, 2024, at the age of 72, in Hampton, Virginia. Born to Ford and Dorothy Swan in Solano, California, Lou spent his formative and final years in Hampton, where he was widely known for his exceptional talent in the art of horticulture.

A proud veteran, Lou served with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. This experience left a lasting imprint on his character and principles. Upon his return to civilian life, he struggled but endured. Eventually he applied the same level of dedication and diligence to re-building his life and creating a successful business, from which he retired after many years of service to his community.

Lou was renowned for his horticultural prowess, often seen tending to gardens with his beloved lawn mower. His memory will be cherished for the splendor he cultivated in both landscapes and hearts, as well as for his profound personal journey and spirituality.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Stephanie Langhorne Swan of Hampton, Virginia; his step-son, Andre Langhorne, of Hampton, VA; his son, Maurice Arrington, of Hampton, Virginia; his daughter, Crystal Jones-Gyingyi (spouse G. Kofi), of Hampton, VA; and his grandchildren: Deondre Jordan, of Arizona, Madison Brown, and Samuel Gyingyi, of Hampton, VA; and Janeek Davis, Daniya Butts and Khari Langhorne of Hampton, VA. Lou is also survived by his Great Aunt LaVern Miller of Poway, California (spouse Granville); Sisters, Laveen Thompson (spouse Alan) of Coronado, Panama; Mary Russell (spouse Christopher) of Houston, Texas; Kevin Swan of Hampton, VA; Catherine Bellinger (spouse Floyd) of Toole, Utah; Stephanie Swan (spouse Brandt Smith) of Clayton, North Carolina; and his brothers, William Swan of Hampton, VA, and Matthew Swan (spouse Barbara) of Norfolk, VA. A multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, In-laws and extended family members also mourn his passing.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter, Nakita Swan-Jordan; his son-in-law, Juan Jordan; his brothers, Bradford Swan and Ford Swan Jr.; his nephew, Charlie Russell III; and step-son Troy Johnson, Jr.

The Swan family finds solace in the knowledge that Lou's spirit will endure in the natural beauty he so lovingly nurtured and in the countless lives he impacted.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Hampton VAMC for their unwavering support of Louis's health over the past three decades. Special thanks are also given to the staff at Coliseum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hampton, VA, and Interim Health, for the compassionate care provided to Louis in his final days.
