John McCary, 70, passed away on February 4, 2023 from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Born in the Tidewater region, John spent his childhood in Norfolk and Northern Virginia. After graduating from Father Judge Mission Seminary in Monroe, VA, John earned a bachelor's degree from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA and a master of social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. As a licensed clinical social worker, John worked in a variety of inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, including a private therapy practice which he co-owned and from which he retired in 2016.

Shortly after returning to the Tidewater region in the late 1970s, John met and married Joan Z. McCary, the woman whom he would later describe as "the only woman I ever loved." During their 26 years of marriage, they had two daughters, three pomeranians, and one pug. John was a devoted husband and a loving and caring father. Outside of his family and work, John enjoyed all things related to the Appalachian Trail, reading every book imaginable on the topic; fishing on the Outer Banks; getting wrapped up in the latest season of Survivor ; and cheering on the Washington Commanders.

John is preceded in death by his wife Joan, father Cecil, and sister Catherine. He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca J. McCary and Sarah A. McCary; mother, Esther Sherman; sisters, Regina Zoske and Lisa McCary-O'Neal; and half a dozen nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am, Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 315 Harris Grove Lane in Yorktown, VA.  Inurnment will be in the church columbarium following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research Michael J. Fox Foundation .
