IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Irmgard Anna
Maria Autrey
September 25, 2020
Mrs. Irmgard Anna Maria Autrey of Newport News, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on September 25, 2020. Irmgard was born August 14, 1937 in Bad Mergentheim, Germany to Alois Hügel and Anna Maria Wilhelm. Irmgard lived in Germany and taught school until 1963, when she married and moved to America. For her whole life, Irmgard devoted herself to church, her students and family. She was awarded a BS in Elementary Education from Christopher Newport College in Newport News, Virginia which enabled her to continue her beloved profession as a teacher after establishing permanent residence. She taught first at Reservoir Elementary School and then at Lee Hall Elementary School until her retirement. Irmgard then taught at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School as a volunteer. Irmgard was passionate about the teaching profession and loved her students very much.
A devout Catholic, she attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and was involved with Little Sisters of the Poor, Covenant House and St. Joseph's School for Indians, among many other charitable causes. Her guild was Sacred Heart of Jesus and her Franciscan group was the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. In addition, she drove parishioners to church and took communion to the home-bound. Irmgard had a beautiful singing voice and spent many years singing in the choir. She found incredible solace in her faith.
Over her lifetime she amassed many hobbies and interests: she enjoyed spending quality time with family, friends and church members; she was politically active and involved in her neighborhood association; she enjoyed teaching crafting and homesteading skills; she loved listening to classical music and playing piano, and everything involving working with children and youth, in whom she saw all the potential for the future.
Irmgard was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Edeltrud Williams, Ida Bissinger and brother Gerhard Hügel. She is survived by her sister, Gudrun Wolter, brother Alois Hügel, her daughters Patricia Rowan (David), Monika Fleet (Ryland), and grandchildren Joshua Autrey (Nicole), Sara Autrey (Austin), Michael Autrey (Liz), Devon Rowan (Tommy), Lauren Rowan and Josh Rowan (Raven), Chance Fleet (Oscar), and four great-grandsons, Felix, Sam, David and Jack.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on October 13, 2020 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. and will also be live-streamed for the benefit of those unable to attend. Interment will be in the church columbarium immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church charities.
