Harold Ray Joyner, 78, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, in Newport News, VA. He was born in Kelford, NC. Harold was a proud veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division and later went on to retire from Dominion Energy after 37 years of service.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Ross Joyner and Betty Vashtie Parker. He is survived by his loving wife Teresa N. Swaim-Joyner; daughter Sheila Joyner O'Neal; son Michael Scott Joyner (Sarah); daughter Krysten N. Swaim-Joyner; brothers Kenneth H. Joyner (Grace); Douglas C. Joyner (Debbie); grandson Thomas R. O'Neal III (Kaydee); great-granddaughters Brinkley and Phoenix O'Neal; and godson Drake A. Williams.
Harold was an avid hunter with a true love and respect for the sport. He honored the animal by providing meat for anyone in need. He was a jack of many trades, always lending a hand to a friend, neighbor, or loved one that needed a home project done. A man of his word, you could count on him to show up and help with a move by lending some muscle or just taking the wheel, no matter the distance.
In the true meaning of the word provider, he took great care of his family, working to give them a good life while caring for and loving them with all his heart. Mostly observant and quiet, he only joined a conversation when he could contribute something of value or a good laugh. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was someone you could always trust. Most of all, Harold was a loving and kind man. He will be greatly missed by all who love him, and he is sure to remain watching over each of us all of our days until we meet again.
Our family would like to thank the Hampton VA for their help and support over the last 2 years during Harold's illness. A special thank you to Sheila Epps, LPN, and Monica Allen, DNP. We would also like to acknowledge his initial hospice care team from Riverside Healthcare, especially Kathy Waggoner, for her exceptional love, support, and continued care for our family. A big thank you to the Medi Home Health Team for providing such great service. Your hospice care is excellent and allowed Harold to have a peaceful homecoming surrounded by
his family and loved ones.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home located at 245 South Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23669. A celebration of Harold's life will directly follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel.
