Evelina Irene Lawrence, 102 entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 9, 2020. Born to Luis and Charity Lawrence on August 22 1917, she was the youngest of 8 children, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She was born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.

Moved to NYC, United States in 1935 at age 18 after graduating high school. Eventually embarked on a career as a seamstress, where she produced apparel for the top named department stores, from which she retired in 1982.

She was an elder member of Transfiguration Luthern Church in Harlem, N.Y. until she moved to Newport News, Virginia with her daughter.

She loved the piano, loved to sing in choir or at home and was the best cook ever , always enjoying family gatherings. Always on the move, always giving of herself to others, she was selfless and loving.

She will be:

Ms. Lawrence is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Lawrence; son, Edgar Lawrence; grandchildren, Shauntka, Jarrel, Evelynia, Maximo, Erica, Jahnica and Malakhi; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Lashae; and nieces, Charity and Julia.

A celebration of Evelina's life will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, May 23, 2020, by Pastors Benjamin Jeter and Felicia Jeter from the House of Refuge in Newport News.  Those who wish to view the service can do so using by clicking here.
