Ernest Alexander Washington May 19, 1964 – October 20, 2026
Ernest Alexander Washington, affectionately known as “Zander,” was born in Newport News, Virginia, to the late James Edward Washington Sr. and Mary Nanette Washington. On October 20, 2026, he peacefully gained his heavenly wings, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Zander graduated from Warwick High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Trident University International and Strayer University. He proudly served 22 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant, and continued his career with the Defense Logistics Agency.
While stationed in Germany, Zander met his wife, Susan. They married in 1985 and welcomed their daughter, Tyrae, in 1988. Family was the center of his life, and he made every effort to stay connected and create lasting memories with those he loved.
Zander enjoyed traveling, cooking for family and friends, riding his Harley-Davidsons, restoring classic automobiles, going to the gym, and buying sneakers. He was rarely without a camera, capturing the people and moments that made his life special.
Those who knew Zander will remember his quiet confidence, generous spirit, playful nature, and genuine care for others. His love was evident in his actions, and his legacy lives on through the family, friendships, and memories he leaves behind.
Zander was preceded in death by his brother, Jesse A. Hogan (Beany). He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Susan E. Washington; daughter, Tyrae Z. Washington; sisters, Rachelle
L. VanBuren (Rick) and Dion A. Martin (Kelly); brother, Eric L. Hogan (Thomasine); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friend.
Friends and family are invited to view Zander from 12:00 Noon-5:00 PM Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Dr. in Hampton. A Celebration of his life will be held at 12:00 Noon at 6th Mt. Zion Baptiest Temple. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
