"Dusty" Jonathan
F. Rhodes
March 14, 1949 – January 23, 2023
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan F. Rhodes, U.S. Army Retired, better known as "Dusty", born March 14, 1949 at Ft. Belvoir, VA, died suddenly of a heart attack on January 23, 2023 at the age of 73, while visiting family in South Carolina.
Dusty was an Army brat who lived in Virginia, Panama, and Germany during his youth with his parents and four siblings. He graduated from Frankfurt High School in Frankfurt, Germany, followed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute Army R.O.T.C. Corps of Cadets (Class of '71), and later earning Masters Degrees from Florida Institute of Technology and Old Dominion University. Upon graduation from Virginia Tech, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. During his 23 years of military service, he was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany, Ft. Gordon, GA, Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft. Lee, VA, Okinawa, Japan, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Stuttgart, Germany, and Norfolk, VA, and served in various assignments, including 82nd Airborne Division, SOCEUR Special Operations, and SACLANT Joint Operations. He served in the Gulf War, and earned numerous military awards and accolades, including the Master Parachutist Badge.
After his retirement from the Army in 1996, he worked as a fiber optic project manager before working Civil Service out of Ft. Monroe and Ft. Eustis, VA, retiring in 2017. During his retirement, Dusty's service transitioned to his community, becoming an active member in the Poquoson American Legion Post 273, St. Mary Star of the Sea parish, Knights of Columbus Council 511, and St. Mary Star of the Sea School board. In addition to his love of fishing and the outdoors, Dusty developed a passion for the art of stained-glass making. His talent led to the commission and donation of several pieces that can be seen at Roanoke Catholic High School, St. Mary Star of the Sea Church and School, and the St. Claire Retreat House in Hampton, VA - as well as the homes of numerous family and friends. Dusty is best known for his dedication to helping others, and the impact of his selfless service is immeasurable.
Dusty is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Elizabeth "M.E." Rhodes; daughter, Sarah Dudley (Jason); son, David Rhodes (Rachelle); grandchildren, Aiden and Brooke Rhodes, Caleb and Colt Dudley; brothers, Jefferson (twin), Randy and Rhett Rhodes, and sister, Roslyn Maseley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Sue Zoboli. He is preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Matthew Rhodes and parents, CSM Jefferson and Bernyce Rhodes.
A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Hampton, VA. Donations made be made in his memory to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School, 14 N. Willard Ave., Hampton, VA 23663.
