IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Lewis
Harris
September 18, 1942 – December 16, 2021
Donald L. Harris was born September 18, 1942 in Jackson, North Carolina to James and Sadie Harris. He attended Northampton County Public School System. He graduated from Gumberry High School in 1962. At an early age he accepted Christ and attended Mount Hope Baptist Church in Jackson, North Carolina for several years. He also attended Faith Fellowship Ministries in Edison, NJ while living in Plainfield, NJ. Upon retiring and relocating to Yorktown, Virginia, he joined and attended World Outreach Worship Center, Newport News where he was a faithful worshiper.
Donald was one that loved his family life, being a great husband and a great provider. He was a fantastic dad, a proud man and a man of respect and dignity. He was kind to all he knew. He was dedicated to his work, manicuring his yard and caring for his home. Painting his home was something he really loved. He enjoyed seeing a refreshed look. Donald thoroughly enjoyed being with his family and wanted nothing but the best for them. He loved going fishing with his son Sean and chewing the fat with son Donald Jr. Family times at the museums, beaches, amusement parks and traveling to various places always made Donald smile as he loved pleasing his family and cherished those special moments. His three favorite things to do were reading, photography, and painting. All of which he did well. Donald was an immaculate and conservative dresser and very particular about everything. He enjoyed the finer things in life!
In April 1963 Donald enlisted in the United States Marines Corps where he served until April 1967. While in the Marines he worked as an 0331 Machine-Gunner and received numerous medals. He was proud and honored to serve his country and quite handsome in his uniform. Donald's final career was with United Parcel Services Corporation where he retired after thirty-one years. He wore his UPS uniform proudly and worked many hard and long hours.
In Donald's latter years quality time spent with his wife Katie and his dog, Rusty provided much enjoyment to him. He walked and played with Rusty on a daily basis. Traveling with Katie continued to be another past-time favorite of his. Two of his favorite vacation spots were Ocho Rios and Dunn's River Falls. He had an admiration for walking the mountain waterfall. Donald was also a lover of western flicks," Gun-smoke" was the one! That was the one you could not interrupt him at all. No matter how many repeated episodes played. Lately and in his final days he begun to enjoy "Netflix."
Donald was his mom, Sadie's youngest son. They shared a special bond together and whenever he came home she had a special glow on her face.
Donald departed this life on Thursday, December 16, 2021. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Sean Harris; his parents, James and Sadie Harris; three brothers, Robert Harris; Roy Harris; Carl Harris; one sister, Dorothy Harris. He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved and devoted wife, Katie Harris of Yorktown, VA; son, Donald L Harris Jr (Newport News, VA); granddaughter, Tiffany Harris (Orange, NJ); sister, Eleanor Harris (Jackson, NC.); sister-in-law, Delois Hurston (Hampton, VA); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
