February 4, 1940 – February 25, 2021
Mr. Demetrius H. Burton transitioned to his heavenly reward on February 25, 2021 in Hampton, Virginia. Hy, as he was affectionately known, was a loving father, brother, and friend to all who knew him. Hy was a unique, loving, and generous man who worked for 55 years to better lives, particularly the homeless. Hy worked for the New York City Human Resources Administration for 40 years, retiring as an assistant commissioner, and served 15 years as the executive assistant to the CEO of Women in Need (WIN), also in New York City.
Hy was predeceased by his birth mother, Beatrice Gilliam Daye, his adoptive parents, Fleeta M. Humphries Burton and Rev. Benjamin Burton, Sr. and brother, Bruce Daye.
Hy leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Hicham Hamadi (Nadia) of Tangier, Morocco, and Krist Inmanee of Bangkok, Thailand; three grandchildren, Tasnime, Islam, and Hayan; sisters, Lorraine Somerville and Pamela Graves of Hampton, VA; brothers, Linwood Daye of Newport News, VA and Benjamin Burton, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; a special cousin, Patricia Lipscomb, of Hampton, VA; special friends, Bonnie Stone, Dr. Sang-Yeun Shim, and Norman Trosten, all of New York City.
