DAVID REAU JOHNSON
Born July 22, 1956
David Reau Johnson passed away nearly a month short of his 68th birthday. In ill health for several years, he coped with his usual combination of a philosophical perspective and good humor.
Born in Newport News to Hal and Sue Johnson, he lived in New York City for many years, after being an art major at Pratt Institute and subsequently working as an illustrator. His work, in its distinctive style, appeared in the NY Times, the Washington Post, and other publications. He was of great comfort to his parents when he moved back to the Peninsula, and was with both at their passing.
David was a creative person with a great sense of humor. He had a treasure trove of information about music, art, history, philosophy, Chinese poetry, and much more. He was an EMT for several years in NYC. He had gradually swapped illustration for cab driving and liked working at night. The work suited him and he had great stories from that career and was clearly an interesting driver to encounter. His compassionate nature led to extra assistance for people in need whom he drove regularly on the Peninsula.
David was a deeply kind person. He will be sorely missed by his sister and her family, and by his dear friends in NY, NJ, and PA. He had a second family among the D'Angelos, in Astoria, Queens.
Cremation has taken place. David, also known as Dave, will be at rest alongside his mother and father, older brother, and infant sister at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA.
