Obituary

Christopher Charles Bock
June 3, 1950  to  July 9, 2025

Chris Bock was born in Philadelphia on June 3, 1950. He spent a carefree childhood there that included
regular vacations on the Jersey Shore and occasional road trips out-of-state. His family valued spiritual
growth as well, and Chris served as altar boy in the Episcopal church. He was an excellent student and
enjoyed reading, playing chess (beating his elders!), and crafting intricate models of ships.

Upon graduating from high school, he attended Pennsylvania State University to earn a Bachelor's and
Villanova University to earn a Master's degree in history. Later he attained a Master's degree in
economics as well.

Chris accepted a teaching position in Shiraz, Iran, in 1976, launching a long and distinguished career in
international schools. Between 1976 and 2001, he also taught in Salzburg, Austria; Rome, Italy; Kuwait
City, Kuwait; Seoul, South Korea; and Helsinki, Finland. He was an effective and popular instructor, and
his students include accomplished professionals in a variety of fields.

He married Ursula Jantz in August 1980, and their family grew to include Michael and Eric.

When they all settled in Hampton, Virginia, in 2001, Chris taught at Jones Magnet Middle School as well
as part-time at Embry Riddle University, Christopher Newport University, Averett University, and (what
was then) Thomas Nelson Community College. In Hampton, he became a regular attendee and also a
member of Huntington Mennonite Church.

Over the years, he experienced several medical setbacks that led to increasing frailty. On July 9, 2025, he
succumbed to Parkinson's disease.

He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jessica Bock (nee Matlack) and his older brother Jeffrey.
He leaves behind his wife Ursula and two sons Michael (Alexandra Kruse) and Eric as well as brothers
and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. Christopher Charles Bock will be remembered with fond
respect for his sense of humor, his commitment to his family, his passion for excellent education, and a
faith that carried him through life.

There are no words to describe how sorely he will be missed.

Among other organizations that alleviate basic needs Chris, regularly supported Doctors Without
Borders and the local foodbank. Please consider donations to such organizations in lieu of flowers.
