Obituary

Charles Kevin Barry, known to friends and family as Kevin, peacefully departed from this world on March 7, 2024 at the age of 79. Born on August 9, 1944, he was the eldest of six children to Charles and Helen Barry. Kevin is survived by his brothers, Wayne Barry, Dennis Barry (Gail), and Bill Barry (Nikki); sisters, Marianne Dusyn (Norb), and Patricia Clark.

Kevin proudly served in the United States Navy, stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after graduating from Holy Cross High School in Flushing, NY. His time working included  Asheville Mica Company, Hutchens Chevrolet, and eventual retirement from Alcoa Howmet Aerospace after nearly 40 years. Kevin's steadfast love for his wife, Monica, endured for 53 years. Deep into their marriage, they were blessed with their only child, Kelly Marie. His joy multiplied with the marriage of his daughter to son-in-law Kevin Richard Smith in 2019, and the arrival of his beloved granddaughter, Eliana Providence Smith in 2022. Kevin discovered boundless joy in embracing the role of "Pop-Pop". His face would light up with a radiant smile at the mere mention of his granddaughter's name, and would eagerly share stories and photos with anyone who would listen. A natural optimist, Kevin enjoyed watching friends and family live "FANTASTIC'' lives, celebrating and sharing in their joys, blessings, and success.

Kevin was an avid and skilled photographer. With his camera in hand, he transformed ordinary moments into extraordinary memories, capturing the beauty and magic of life with expertise and vision. Whether it was the gentle embrace of a sunset or the joyous laughter of loved ones, Kevin had an uncanny ability to freeze-frame moments that would otherwise slip away into the fabric of time. He was likewise fond of baseball, playing cards, music, and NASCAR racing-–particularly for Dale Earnhardt, "The Intimidator," whom he had the honor of photographing. Kevin's love of film extended to the big screen—his favorite being "The Godfather"; a title he personally received several times from nieces and nephews.

In his later years, Kevin faced numerous health struggles with determination and courage, particularly in his battle with cancer. Embarking on years of treatment, doctor's appointments, and drug therapy, he was called "a walking miracle" due to the number of cards stacked against him. However, his heart was broken after Monica's unexpected and sudden passing this past September. Despite the challenges he endured, Kevin continued to push on with resilience and a fighting spirit until the very end. Words from 2 Timothy 4:7 echo deeply as we reflect on his life: "I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith". The family would like to extend their immense gratitude to Kelly and Kevin Smith for opening their home and hearts to "Pa" in the last 6 months of his life. Additionally, a huge thank-you to all of the healthcare workers who were part of Kevin's journey at Virginia Oncology Associates, Hampton VA Medical Center, and Riverside Hospice.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. John David Ramsey on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 10am in St. Michael's Hall, 144 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, VA 23601. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests any donations be made to the "Eliana Providence Smith Education Fund". Arrangements are by Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions in Hampton, 757-825-8070.

Though Kevin may no longer be with us in body, his spirit lives on in the moments he captured on film, the love and generosity he shared, and the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in eternal peace, knowing the impact he had on his family and all who knew him.

"Kevin's wish was to see his granddaughter Eliana attend private Catholic school, as a continuation of his faith to the next generation. If you would like to help fulfill this wish, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the "Eliana Providence Smith Education Fund" by clicking HERE.
