Obituary

Bruce Fuller Hicks Snellings, 102, of Hampton, VA, died peacefully on February 15, 2024. Bruce was born on April 4, 1921, on a farm in Nash County, NC, to the late Billie and Manolia Wells Fuller. Her husband, Norman Hicks, died when she was 28 years old. She also was predeceased by her husband Edwin Snellings.

Her family will remember her as a Christian woman who never lied- even by omission. You could depend on what she said as being the whole truth. At the age of 40, when she left her job at Rocky Mount Mills to take her LPN training at Norfolk General Hospital, her supervisor remarked on her willingness to help older, fellow workers who sometimes struggled to "hold up their end."  Her work ethic and determination in providing for her family in a financially responsible manner drew praise from her boss. Her grandchildren got to enjoy her relaxed, playful side when they visited- days at the beach, listening to stories of her climbing apple trees to check on the whereabouts of her family working out in the fields, how much she loved her mother and "helped" her, how much she cherished the time with her grandfather in his woodworking shop.

She was predeceased by brothers Atlas Fuller and Rudolph Fuller, sisters Mildred F. Johnson and Undine F. Parker, as well as some of her nephews and a niece.

Left with precious memories of her are children Wynette H. McPherson, Beverly H. Perry, Ronald (Paula) Hicks, and stepson William (Courtenay) Snellings;  grandchildren Laura M. (Wade) Gibbs, Andrew (Teresa) McPherson, Amy McPherson, Michael (Julie) Perry, Kelly H.(Galen) Gibbons, Lorien S. (Jessica) Whitten, Brittany S. (Elido) Garcia, and Quinn S. (Nathaniel) Emmons, along with great-grandchildren Andrew, Nicholas, Fynn, Emma, Clare, Kai, Grant and Adeline, also by nieces and nephews who admired and loved her. Her example of a life well lived gives encouragement to her family.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to a church or charity of your choice.

Her cremains were buried in Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount, NC. Her life will be celebrated on May 4, 2024, at the Bethany Baptist Church, 704 Batchelor Road, Sharpsburg, NC 27878. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 AM.
