Hampton,
Betty Haley Peak, 90, widow of Donald W. Peak, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020. Born in Murray, KY, she has been a resident of the VA Peninsula since 1964. Betty and her husband lived in the Denbigh area of Newport News for over 20 years, where they raised their two children. Betty moved to Hampton in 1988, where she has resided for over 30 years. She retired from the Daily Press, in the Subscription Dept., but held many different jobs over her lifetime, to include Restaurateur/Co-Owner of the area's first Orange Julius, located in the Peninsula's first indoor Mall (Mercury Mall). By far, her favorite job was working at Heritage Antiques in Smithfield, where she could help decorate, talk to customers, and go antiquing with her significant other of 22 years, Robert "Bob" Wiatt Jr., who predeceased Betty by almost 2 years to the day.
Betty was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Hampton, up until her health prevented her from attending. As the wife of a Naval Officer, she was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary while stationed in Spain. She was also a Scout Den Mother, Avid Bridge Player and an excellent seamstress, sewing cheerleading and dance recital costumes, clothing, alterations, curtains, cushions and even surfboard bag/covers. Betty loved to garden in her flower beds, and was knowledgeable about plants, sharing her love of plants with family and neighbors.
Betty was a supportive Military Wife, moving often in support of her husband's military career. Their duty stations included Alameda California, Norfolk VA, Argentia Newfoundland, Barcelona and Rota Spain, and finally Yorktown Va. Betty was a loving, and supportive Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, who often provided care for her grandchildren and attended many of their activities. Betty was predeceased by her brother Paul E. Haley (Jean) of Allentown PA, and is survived by her children and their spouses, G. Daryl Peak (Barbara) of Windsor, VA and Caryl P. Ryan (Ray) of Carrollton, VA, grandchildren and their spouses; Dawn Peak (Kory Freudenberg), Kristen Williams (Justin Williams), Kelli Peak (Cordray Ward), Cody Ryan, Jakob Ryan, great-grandchildren; Jaden Butler-Peak, George Keagan Freudenberg, Ryann Haley Freudenberg, Addison Williams, Emma Williams, and Amaya Ward; Nieces; Laura Oakes, Janice Haley-Schwoyer, Paulette Stark, numerus cousins and extended family in Murray Ky, to include Gary Cooper (Geneva). Family on her husband's side includes; Micki Carwin, Don Chappell, Dorthy Mehler, Other survivors include; Robin Wiatt of Waterlily NC, and Betty's closest friends and neighbors; Phyllis Anderson, Brenda Poole, and Hazel Kvesich.
The family would like to Thank the army of people who helped Betty live a more comfortable life over the last 6.5 years. These people and agencies include; Riverside's awesome Hospice and Palliative Care Teams led by Dr. Teresa McConaughy, Frances Powell of Hand 'n Heart Home Care, Stephanie Jones of Home Sweet Home Care of Smithfield, Marie Bazemore, Orthopedic Physicians and Surgeons' Dr Raj Sureja and Monica Beckett, and the helpful staff of Wallgreens Pharmacy at Big Bethel Rd. A special thanks to our Friends, Co-workers and Church Families who often sent cards, gifts and lifted Betty in prayer.
Due to Covid-19, a private family graveside service will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday at Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens by Pastor Roderick Clayton, Riverview UMC, Carrollton Va.
