Betty Sue Dickson (née Nichols), 83, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia, the city where she was born and spent her life. Born on June 2, 1942, in Newport News, Betty was a lifelong resident who left a lasting impression on her community. In the 1980s and 1990s, she became a familiar face to many as the owner of the Four Leaf Clover in Newport News. Her dedication to her work and the warmth she brought to those around her made the establishment a beloved local spot.
Betty’s heart was known to be as pure as they come. She had a deep love for animals and was especially fond of her ferrets. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Ferret Granny,” a nickname that reflected both her nurturing nature and passion for animals. She found joy in creative pursuits such as crocheting, knitting, sewing, and embroidering—skills. She approached life and her hobbies with care and shared generously with those around her. She and her sister (Maryanne) enjoyed crocheting hats for the cancer patients at Riverside Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dickson; her parents, Lewis and Mary Nichols; and her brother Dale Nichols.
Betty is survived by her children; Denise Stewart (Billy), Beverly MacDonald (Rex), Herman Meredith III (Cindy), and Leslie Effler (Monk); ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren who will carry forward her memory with love. Betty was also blessed with a bonus daughter, Kim Keel and with her Betty’s grandbaby count grew with Kim’s three sons and four grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: sisters, Maryanne Martin, Bonnie Shelton, Donna Grantham, and Mona Hodges; and brother William “Billy” Nichols.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association and St. Jude Children Hospital. A celebration of life will be held on February 28, 2026, from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM American Legion - Post 25 7609 Marshall Ave Newport News, VA 23605
