Betty Lee Burnes, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Born to Bruce and Helen Sims in Newport News, she was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1953 and was employed at NASA's Langley Research Center for 38 years, retiring in 1991.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 43 years David Burnes; sons Kevin Phillips of Hampton and Steven Phillips of Williamsburg and stepson Michael Burnes of Pleasanton, California; daughters-in-law, Rebecca Sue Phillips of Williamsburg and Juhyun Burnes of Pleasanton, California; grandchildren, Tyler Phillips of Newport News, Morgan Phillips of Hampton, and twin grandsons Iian and Jared Burnes of Pleasanton, California; great grandchildren, Camden Phillips of Gloucester and Maeve Phillips of Newport News.

She was a Life Master ranked ACBL bridge player and enjoyed playing bridge at the Peninsula Bridge Center in Hampton and duplicate bridge tournaments throughout Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Berceuse Funeral & Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, Virginia.
