Obituary

After an extended illness, Arthur McIver, Jr passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.  Born in New York City, NY on August 29, 1946 to Arthur McIver, Sr. and Lillian Stevenson McIver, both of whom preceded him in death. He has been a resident of Yorktown since 1994.

After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School, New York, NY., he entered into the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He enrolled in "jump school" in Fort Bragg, NC, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Paratrooper Unit. During his service he was awarded the Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals. On his second tour in Vietnam, he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart of Valor. After his honorable discharge from military service, he was employed at Eastern Airlines, Queens, NY until his retirement.  Arthur was then employed by the United States Postal Service in Long Island and later transferred to Virginia until his retirement.  By his friends he was known as "Mack" and "Artie Mack".

Arthur was an all-around family man, loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather, affectionately referred to as Pop-pop. He was a fantastic provider to his family and those he loved.  Although he was not one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he supported his family in their faith and attended special talks, memorials and conventions. He protected all of his family, especially the female members of the family, and was a stand-in father figure to many. Arthur was very hospitable, he and Yvonne enjoyed hosting family gatherings at their homes in Long Island, NY and Yorktown, VA.  He was fun-loving, made everyone laugh and was always a "gentle giant". People flocked to him because of his personality and willingness to help.  The neighborhood children sought him out to come outside to play with them. He was also the neighborhood Mr. Fix-it for the children's toys and bikes. Additionally, he played all types of sports and games with the children. Arthur's favorite sport was basketball and he played on several basketball teams.

Arthur was a loyal friend and maintained some friendships for over 60 years, such as his childhood friends, Basil Douglas, Billy Avery and Otis Thomas. He was an only child, but he considered them his "brothers". He enjoyed long standing friendships with his Eastern Airline family, his U.S. Postal family and NYC Battleground Park family. They continued to have their monthly retiree breakfast, annual reunions and barbecue's. In addition to these, he had a host of friends that are too many to mention by name.

Arthur McIver, Jr. is survived by his wife of 51 years, Yvonne McIver; children, Keith McIver (Shaun) and Kaydra McIver and grandchildren, Kayla and Kyndell McIver, sisters-in-law; Wilhelmenia Brown, Iris Langhorn, Celeste Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, loving cousins and loving friends.
