In Loving Memory of Anne E. Gullen
Anne E. Gullen, aged 90, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Anne's warmth and compassion touched the lives of everyone around her.
Born in Hartford, CT, to Edward T. and Anne F. Gainty, Anne is survived by her daughters: Elizabeth Gullen of New Haven, CT, Mary McGonigle (Kevin), and Margaret Gullen of Yorktown, VA. She cherished her grandchildren, Keanan McGonigle of Washington, DC, and Kathleen McGonigle (Matthew) of Denver, CO.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Col. John P. Gullen Jr. (Ret.), and siblings Thomas J. and Edward F. Gainty and Patricia R. Stewart, Anne's legacy lives on through her family.
Anne met John in 1951 at the Connecticut All-State Chorus Concert, and they married in 1957. Their journey began with a cross-country drive to California for John's first duty station. As an exemplary officer's wife, she managed their household with grace, hosted social events, and sewed clothes for her daughters, affectionately known as 'Annie's Angels'.
Her life was marked by a loving and compassionate spirit. A devout Catholic and prolific volunteer, Anne embraced her role in the community. After 18 moves in 23 years, including two tours in Germany, she and John settled in Alexandria, VA, where she served as an executive secretary for the Military Officers Association of America until her retirement.
In retirement, Anne continued to pursue her passions: being a grandmother, baking, cooking holiday meals, singing, traveling, and volunteering. Despite battling Lupus, she maintained her physical and emotional fitness. In 2017, Anne and John moved to The Chesapeake, a senior living community in Newport News, where they built lasting friendships.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Chesapeake for their compassionate care, with special appreciation for Sam Hill, whose kindness and warmth always brought a smile to Anne's face. Anne's faith and social conscience remained steadfast throughout her life, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 24th, at 10 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News. Anne will be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America or the Social Ministry Fund at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
