Alvin Edward McCray, 82, passed away on December 16, 2025. Born in St. Louis, MO, he has been a resident of the Peninsula since 1971.
Alvin served in the US Army for 14 years, which included two tours during the Vietnam War. He received numerous awards and medals including the Purple Heart that he passed down to his grandson, A1C Christian White. He went on to work four years with the Hampton Police Department, first as a Patrolman, then as the third Black officer assigned to the K9 unit with his partner, Kojak and finished his working years with over 30 years at the US Postal Service as a Tractor Trailer Operator.
Surviving him are his wife, Janis Saxon McCray; children, Marcel Leroy McCray (Lisa) and Cassandra McCray White; grandchildren, Miyah McCray, Senior Airman Madison McCray, Jordan McCray, Joseph White, Lakiyah White, Airman First Class Christian White, Tyisha Campbell (Deion), Raven Robinson and Monte Russell, great-grandchildren, Mykel White and Olivia Campbell, and a host of extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Leila Spearman and his father, Richard Cross.
The family will receive friends from 11:30-1:30 PM Monday, December 29, 2025, at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Dr. in Hampton. At 2:00 PM, a graveside service will be conducted at Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
